Civic Hero Award

September , 2001

Emergency Responders
October 2, 2001

The Arlington County Civic Federation extends its sincerest appreciation to the Arlington County Police Department, Sheriff's Department, Emergency 911 Center, numerous Arlington County Staff and School employees, the Virginia Hospital Center - Arlington, local Red Cross personnel as well as members of neighboring jurisdictions who came to Arlington's aid during the emergency at the Pentagon.

On September eleventh, in the year two thousand and one, the Pentagon building, located within Arlington County, was violently and unexpectedly attacked by terrorists in a hijacked airliner. In a heinous act of violence, the terrorists drove the aircraft into the western wall of a building that serves as a national landmark and a symbol of American strength. In addition to the immediate response provided by Arlington's Firefighters and Paramedics, a response "in depth" was quickly provided by Arlington County Police who arrived almost immediately on scene. They were followed County Sheriff's Deputies and by neighboring city and county personnel from, Al-exandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, the District of Columbia and Federal authorities. In the week fol-lowing the disaster, nearly every Arlington County Department participated in assisting at the Pen-tagon. Services included such acts as provision of emergency power by Public Schools employees, disposal of debris by Public Works crews, evidence collection by Arlington Police working along-side FBI investigators, to mention just a few. Additionally, the rapid responses by the Virginia Hospital Center - Arlington and the Arlington Chapter of the Red Cross saved lives and helped to cope with an emergency medical situation of unprecedented proportions.

Any list made to recognize those who came to Arlington's aid would undoubtedly be incomplete in noting all of those who earned our eternal gratitude. Nonetheless, all of those have helped our County in its time of need should know that the long hours of service and personal sacrifice for our community is deeply appreciated and makes them worthy of this recognition as an Arlington County Civic Federation "Civic Heroes."

By A Unanimous Vote Of A Grateful Civic Federation,

Jim Pebley,
President.
