Subject: Expanded Public Involvement Process with the Idea66 Study

Dear Ms Defore,

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Arlington County Civic Federation, I am writing to express our concerns about the use of the information collected during the public input period, and the procedures and information provided to the public during the next phase of the study.

First, we would like to express our appreciation for providing several opportunities for members of the public to provide input and to ask questions of staff involved in the project. Our concern is with what happens next. The community is in the dark about what is happening with that public input and how it will be reflected in the study. Because of this concern, we request that the Idea66 study expand the public involvement process to provide meaningful public input throughout the course of the study.

Specifically, we request that before the draft of the study is sent to the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the draft be made available for public comment. The opportunity to comment should be open to the public at large as well as to specific stakeholders such as the Arlington County Civic Federation and its member organizations, the Arlington County Board, and the Arlington County Transportation Commission.

We also recommend that public meetings be held at which citizens can make their views known on the draft report and that Idea66 staff be available to present the draft report at community meetings.

The Arlington County Civic Federation would welcome a presentation of the draft report at its monthly meeting on March 1, 2005. I would be happy to talk with you further about this.

Sincerely,

Patrick Smaldore,
President, Arlington County Civic Federation
