Join Tree Stewards April 26th � May 4th in Arlington and Alexandria for one or all of a weeklong series of events celebrating trees in our urban forest. Tree plantings, presentations on the basics of good tree care, a panel discussion on doing construction around trees, a workshop on landscaping with trees, and neighborhood tree walks: come and learn what you can do to promote the health of canopy in your back yard and these communities. All events are free and open to the public. No registration required, unless noted.


Tree plantings

Earth Day will be celebrated in both Arlington and Alexandria on Saturday, April 26th with tree plantings along Four Mile Run. On the Alexandria side, while youth groups participate in a stream clean-up, come to Four Mile Run Park�s official Arbor Day ceremonies at 9 a.m., and stay for tree planting workshops at 10 and 11 a.m. and hands-on plantings throughout the morning around the park, as well as tree walks and other family-friendly activities. 3700 Commonwealth Avenue. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In Arlington, the Potomac Conservancy and Growing Native -- a collaborative project to increase understanding of the connection between healthy, forested lands and clean water and to engage people of all ages in the hands-on restoration of native forests � is asking volunteers to help plant 700-800 trees at Allie S. Freed Park along Four Mile Run Drive (2465 S. Culpepper Street, between Walter Reed and George Mason). The plantings take place Saturday the 26th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and again Sunday the 27th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..

Another family-friendly opportunity to plant trees, and understand how they grow by excavating roots of established trees, is sponsored by Arlington ReLeaf at the Potomac Overlook Regional Park�s annual Open House, Sunday, May 4th, from 1 to 4 p.m.


Tree Care Basics

� Everything You Need to Know about Tree Care that your Arborist May Not Have Time to Tell You! Join Tree Stewards for an dinformative presentation on how trees grow and prosper, promoting healthy roots, pruning at the right time and place, and how to establish new trees for a healthy future.

  • Monday, April 28th: Alexandria�s Burke Branch Library, 4701 Seminary Road (just east of I-395), 7 p.m.

  • Tuesday, April 29th: Arlington Central Public Library, 1015 North Quincy (Virginia Square Metro), 7:30 p.m.


Trees and Invasives

Tree Stewards and native plant gardeners present an invasive removal workshop. Learn how to rid your trees and backyard of ivy and other invasive plants, restore it to native cover, and create a certifiable wildlife habitat. Co-sponsored by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, Parks and Recreation, and Remove Invasive Plants. Monday, April 28th: Fairlington Community Center, Room 15, 3308 S. Stafford Street (off Quaker Lane). 7 p.m.


Tree Preservation during Construction

Consulting Arborist Don Zimar, a design and development specialist, county zoning and environmental staff and policy makers will hold a panel discussion and answer your questions on how to save trees during construction projects large and small. New ordinances (e.g., Chesapeake Bay Ordinance) affecting property owners will be addressed. Thursday, May 1st: Arlington Central Public Library Auditorium, 1015 North Quincy (Virginia Square Metro), 7:30 p.m.


Landscaping with Trees in Suburban Spaces: New Ideas and Introductions

Scientists and curators from the National Arboretum will present a workshop on incorporating trees into the garden landscape, emphasizing drought-resistant species, using the right tree for the right space, trees that fit into smaller suburban gardens, and recent Arboretum introductions. A tree walk follows. Reservations required. 703 228-6414. Saturday, May 3rd: Ft. C. F. Smith, 2411 North 24th Street (off Lorcom Lane and Fillmore Street), 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Note: If the weather is fair, bring along a picnic lunch!


Neighborhood Tree Walks

Join Tree Stewards in a walk about your neighborhood, looking at street and garden trees. A professional arborist will join the approximately one-hour-long walks, another chance to hear about latest practices in maintaining healthy trees fertilization, watering, pruning recommendations as well as pest and disease issues. The walks offer an opportunity to gather together as a community and to learn more about tree care. Walks are scheduled for the following sites and civic associations:

  • Aurora Hills/Virginia Highlands Saturday, April 26th, 2 p.m. Arborist Peter Deal from Cornerstone Landscaping.

  • Dover/Crystal/Riverwood Saturday, April 26th, 4 p.m. Consulting Arborist Jim Biller.

  • Northeast Alexandria Saturday, April 26th Time & arborist TBA.

  • Arlington Heights Sunday, April 27th, 2 p.m. Consulting Arborist Ron Perlik from Growing Earth Tree Care.

  • Oakcrest Sunday, April 27th, 2 p.m. Arborist Andy Ross from RTEC.

  • Ft. Ward Park Sunday, April 27th, 4 p.m. Arborist & Extension Agent Tom Tyler.

  • Williamsburg/East Falls Church Saturday, May 3rd, 4 p.m. Arborist Jeff Aten, Care of Trees.

Tree Stewards are citizens dedicated to the planting and protection of trees and the growth of the �urban forest� in Arlington and Alexandria, VA.
