Alliance for Housing Solutions (AHS): Ellen Bozman Annual Award
This new award will recognize an individual or organization which has significantly advanced efforts to increase the supply of and/or to improve the quality of affordable housing in Arlington through leadership, innovation and effectiveness over time. Recognition can be for contributions made through Commonwealth or Arlington County policies and programs, project design and implementation, services which improve the quality of life for residents of affordable housing developments, public advocacy, or public education. Nominations must be submitted in writing and document the nominee’s contributions to advancing affordable housing in Arlington. Supporting letters are encouraged. Nominees need not be residents of or located in Arlington. Nominations must be received by June 30, 2009 and sent to The Alliance for Housing Solutions, P.O. Box 7009, Arlington, VA 22207. The first award will be presented at a September 26 reception at the Gates of Ballston Community Center in Arlington. The Gates of Ballston is an affordable housing development. She will discuss the environmental impacts of maintaining a grass lawn and talk about alternatives, including planting native ground covers, using yards for food production, xeriscaping, and more. The workshop will include hands-on composting demonstrations and other techniques to help you transform your yard into a space that doesn't rely on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or frequent watering.
